Compressibly Cute: The Most Stylishly Convenient Winter Coat You’ll Ever Wear

| August 15, 2012 | 0 Comments

I know it’s still the summer, but like your mom told you growing up, you should always plan in advance.  Especially with fashion. It’s one thing to be unprepared and it’s another to look unprepared, particularly when it comes to seasons. So as much as you don’t want to envision yourself trudging through a couple feet of snow while you’re still basking in the August sun’s rays, there’s no harm in at least considering your upcoming winter wardrobe.

Have you ever faced the problem of how to crunch your giant down jacket into your backpack? Ever returned to your “hiding spot” at the frat party come the end of the night to discover that your jacket has been stolen, leaving you to walk home sans protection from the frigid winter cold?  Ever confronted a fashion dilemma in terms of choosing a coat that’s practical and warm but still looks decent with your dress? If so, you’re not alone. Finding the perfect down jacket as a college student is the perfect predicament (unless you’re fortunate enough to attend school in Miami, California, or somewhere else that’s blissfully warm year round-the most layers you’ll probably ever wear is the towel over your bathing suit).

What then is the solution to the woes that come with determining ideal winter wear? Well, a UNIQLO jacket, of course. But what is a UNIQLO jacket?

UNIQLO, $69.90

UNIQLO, a Japanese company that continues to expand its international franchise, currently located in three New York City hotspots, provides all the basics-tees, jeans, leggings, sweaters- for the shopper whose keen on both fun colors and college-budget-friendly prices. Their specialty though, in my opinion at least, is their outerwear. Available in long, short, and vest styles, their winter wear is both trendy and affordable. So now you’re probably wondering what differentiates these down jackets from all others.

Well, the fact that you can bunch them up to pack in your purse is kind of a deal breaker. Yes, I know, that’s somewhat of a ridiculous image, but UNIQLO makes this seemingly impossible feat a reality.  UNIQLO’s down jackets are made of an ultra thin yet ultra warm material that’s compressible enough to practically fit into the palm of your hand.  With one of these jackets, you’ll never have to worry about where to hide your coat at that party ever again or what to wear out at night without looking like a snowman. And, if you’re traveling home for break, not only can you forget shivering on those often frigid airplanes, but you can also forget the hassle of lugging around a giant puffy down jacket because you’ll be able to easily pop it right into your carry on. Perhaps the best part about these coats, apart from how cute they look, is how they feel.  Lightweight and soft, the UNIQLO coat is the perfect alternative to a light sweater or blazer for slightly more stormy or snowy weather.

The only downside?  UNIQLO does not currently have an online store and is only in New York City at the moment. However, the company will hopefully be opening more locations in other major cities, having already announced its plans to spread the UNIQLO craze on the West Coast and in New Jersey. But, for the time being, if you do happen to be in the Big Apple, UNIQLO should definitely be on your pitstop list. One visit here=one incredibly less stressful winter when you don’t find yourself searching for a winter coat that 1. Won’t be stolen 2. Won’t engulf you 3. Doesn’t cost more than your college tuition.
