Hey there! So I’m Allison, and before I joined The Campus Companion’s Party Lab, I made a Tumblr called partyproblems. There, I have been long humoring the Tumblr community by detailing all the ways a party experience can go wrong.

Lately, however, I’ve come to realize that my worst night out never actually ended too badly. Even that night when I walked two miles back to my dorm in heels because I missed the bus or the time I missed the first step and drunkenly tumbled down a flight of stairs in front of everyone, I can still look back on those memories fondly.

No matter what party problems you may face, there are always opportunities to turn it back around into a good night. So I present to you my first post and first installment of PARTY SOLUTIONS.

Party Solution: For one thing, I would not recommend packing everyone into the vehicle like sardines. Take it from my experience, it’s not pleasant to immediately fall out onto gravel when the doors open or to roll around in the trunk. Before your group gets hammered, you could try to get the DD to make two or more trips. My best solution is to take the bus, especially when you’re a college student. At 2AM, it’s not the ordinary transit, it’s the drunk bus… and it’s much more fun than you might think. On the drunk bus, the music is blasting and plenty of drunk students are still reveling in high spirits; think of it as another party on wheels. But if this isn’t convincing enough, just remember that it’s better (and safer) than walking.

Party Solution: No one has the right to ruin your good time, and you shouldn’t let them either. If people want to be drunken messes and throw tantrums during the party, let them be and walk away. Grab another drink, go hit the dance floor, chat up your friends, or just do anything else to keep your mind distracted from all the fuss. They’re going to be the ones complaining about what an awful time they had, but not you.

Party Solution: This one is definitely my problem ALL THE TIME. Though it may be more common among the Asian crowd, I have seen all sorts of people turn flaming red from drinking. A good trick to prevent it is to take an antacid (like Pepcid AC or Tums). But if you’re already stuck in the glow, eat as much as you can until the flare goes down; bread or anything starchy seems the most effective. Works like a charm so that you can go on your merry, partying way.

Party Solution: The worst thing you can do is regret it. Whatever happened, happened and there’s no taking it back. So try your best to remember how much fun you had that night instead of continuing to let yourself feel humiliated. Just remember a little more self-control for the next time.

Party Solution: Don’t think that going to a party is the only way you can have fun. There are countless parties I’ve missed because I never left the pregame. Small gatherings at a dorm or apartment are just as enjoyable, if not more. As long as you’re with good company and genuinely having a good time, you don’t have to pressure yourself to be elsewhere.
