A Black Light Party is one of my top picks for parties that I love to throw and attend. You can go simple with a few of these great tips and tricks, or you can go all-out and have the most talked about bash on campus.

Black light, neon, and UV  parties come in all sorts of variations, which makes them some of the most versatile parties you can throw. Here are some important tips to remember when throwing one of these parties.

The Lighting:

First off,  you’ll want your party space as dark as possible, so make sure to cover up the windows with dark curtains.

For your lighting you’ll need some black lights, and there are  all sorts of different bulbs and tubes to choose from. You will want to cover the entire area,  so keep this in mind when shopping for lights. I prefer the black light tubes because they’re relatively inexpensive and seem to work the best.

For the best effect, I usually position them high up on the walls near the ceiling around the room, and in the center of the ceiling. You can add black spotlight bulbs in other areas of the room for added effects.

If you have a large space or different rooms, adding things like a fog machine or a bubble machine with blacklight reactive bubbles  are always huge hits. Fiber optic, strobe and other party lights always work really great too. I usually have a disco ball up just for the added lighting. Glow in the dark or neon decorations, table cloths with neon designs, or neon balloons are great additions as well.

Party Attractions:

Neon/UV cupsplates, and utensils > are always crowd-pleasers. Set up a glow in the dark beer pong or beirut table with UV cups and UV ping pong balls . The quinine in tonic water glows under black light and is great to use for glow in the dark ice or you can get Litecubes to add to drinks. UV reactive Jello shots are awesome and pretty easy to make with this recipe.

 The Guests:

For my invites I usually just make up a graphic with black/purplish background and neon text and email/mms them to people, but I’ve also done handmade ones. Start out with some black paper (I’ve found construction paper works great). Pick up some neon paint markers and just write out the invitations. I mailed mine in some black envelopes I found online, addressed with the neon markers.

Guests should be encouraged to wear white tee shirts, black or neon clothing, I always get a huge box of assorted color highlighters  and leave them scattered around for the guests to write or draw with. I also buy lots of glow sticks, necklaces, and bracelets to hand out. Another great idea is to pick up some neon body paint for people to paint each other with, just be warned that this can get really messy.
