For me the issue was mostly derived from the fact that I enjoyed hosting large raucous schindigs, and when you have limited space but lots of guests a beer pong table isn’t always the best use of space, especially where that space could be used for grinding your genitals against someo…errr I mean dancing.

However in light of recent experience, I think I may have amended my opinion …because gone are the days of playing pong on a rickety table that crowds my venue, looks like crap, and ultimately reduces the enjoyability of the party for the rest of the guests who aren’t playing and don’t care to play.

THE TABLE

The spark to my new opinion was ignited by the fine people over at BJ’s Beer Pong who as a gesture of peace and business decided to send us a table to test out and ultimately raffle off (stay tuned for our giveaway!).  Damn decent of them if I may say so myself.  But I digress:

When first playing on a Bj’s custom table my thoughts and feelings were reminiscent of what I imagine it would feel like to be the Russian guy from those semi-recent Direct T.V. commercials, and his catch phrase certainly applies.  ”Opulence…I has it.”

There is a distinct prestige that comes when playing upon a table with your own custom graphics, and if for no other reason, this would be enough to make a table seem worthwhile, but that brings me to my next point.  The game play.

GAMEPLAY

Despite my stance towards pong, you do not reach a level of expertise on party planning without having having played the game a few thousand times, and in my experience your average table at a college party is either rickety, too small, too low, too high, not level, or has poor or unpredictable bounce properties.  A custom table however rises above these issues and ultimately makes your game more consistent  allowing good players to perform better, and bad players (despite my experience, I may be included here) to play well (read: less suckily).

THE POINT THAT ULTIMATELY SOLD THE PARTY LAB

Finally though, there is one point above all others that sold us over here at TCC.  In a word, compaction.  A long time ago, before TCC had been constructed as it is today, I had written a post questioning whether beer pong was really suitable for a full-on party setting (as opposed to small get togethers of 25 or less people) and my ultimately conclusion was that size and space mattered.  Beer pong tables were usually larger and more unwieldy than necessary and as a result took valuable space away from the majority of your guests for the gain of only those who were playing.  Thus, my verdict was nay, spare the space and nix the table, but it no longer may be an issue.

Bj’s tables are compact.  This isn’t to say they are too small, but rather they are no wider than they need to be and can be fit in out of the way spaces at parties reducing and eliminating potential detriment.  PLUS, the size enhances game play as players are not constantly getting balls-back because the table is so wide that it is impossible for the ball to roll off.  Because honestly, 98% of people are going to miss when they shoot behind the back and it is just a frivolous exercise in stupidity to have to do it over and over again because the ball never drops.

TO CONCLUDE

Bj’s tables are available at a range of prices and levels of customization and for the value provided, we would say they are a worthwhile investment for any individual who frequently entertains.  The quality stands up where the graphics are concerned (i.e. they don’t get ruined if you spill, say, beer on them as we have seen with some other tables), and they are finished locally (who says the US doesn’t do any manufacturing stuff anymore).

I’ll leave you with a quote from Ferris Bueller, someone that I think has inspired many individuals of our generation to strive for more, especially when it comes to having fun and enjoying a good time:

Keep It Coming

Keep your eye out for Nicky Romero in 2012. Apart from releasing the massive “Toulouse” and the preview for this upcoming track (to be released on Tiesto’s label, Musical Freedom), Nicky Romero has garnered support from the likes of David Guetta, Tiesto, Kaskade, and House Legend Green Velvet. The first time I heard Rihanna sing “We Found Love” I thought, “Fuck, If only this song was by The Fray! That would totally take things to the next level.” I slept-walked through the next month, unable to avoid listening to Rihanna destroy a song  I knew was meant for those beautiful male crooners. Boyce Avenue heard my cries for help and recorded this stunning rendition, and while not the Fray themselves, it’s pretty damn close. Rejoice!
