Sample Saturdays: Pretty Lights – Finally Moving

| July 30, 2011 | 3 Comments

Pretty Lights, born Derek Vincent Smith, has taken the college music scene by storm. He plays sold-out shows across the nation in front of thousands of fans who come to listen to glitched-out genre-defying productions. Now a regular at festivals like Coachella, Ultra and Camp Bisco, Pretty Lights started out by providing quality music for free at prettylights.com (still avaliable for free and well worth checking out). His track Finally Moving off the record Taking Up Your Precious Time was his first big hit, and for a good reason. It showcases his best talent – creative sampling.

Digging in the crates back to 1962, Smith found this gem by Etta James, called Something’s Got a Hold On Me

Then, he paired that up with William Bell’s Private Number. This track has been sampled many times before.

The result is a creative combination of two classic songs. Although Pretty Lights has the ability to create original tracks, his best songs draw on influential musicians from the past. Perhaps this explains his universal appeal in a genre usually not enjoyed by the masses.
