College Pantry Staples
So, your kitchen’s set up, fridge plugged in, only problem there’s no food. Where to start?? Here is a list of things that should be in your kitchen at all times. Any decent cook will have these on hand at any time – having these ingredients accessible can make or break you.
- Salt and pepper
- Flour
- Sugar
- Olive oil and vegetable oil
- Butter
- Lemon juice
- Chicken bouillon cubes or beef bouillon cubes- just add water and you have broth (not to mention it’s a hell of a lot cheaper)
- Eggs
- Milk
- Pasta
- Rice
- Potatoes
- Onions
- Garlic
- Dried spices
- Italian seasoning
- All-spice
- Garlic powder
- Paprika
- Cajun seasoning
- Bay leaves (helpful aromatic for soups/sauces)
- Chili powder
- Dried herbs (basil, oregano, thyme, tarragon)
- Cumin
- Coriander
- Red pepper flakes
- Curry powder
- Cayenne pepper
- Cinnamon
- Cloves
- Nutmeg
- Jane’s Krazy salt (mix it up salt get it because it’s good).
- Canned tomatoes/tomato paste
- Cooking spray
- Vinegar of some sort – balsamic is my favorite but is also the most expensive – there are others such as: white vinegar, cider vinegar, red wine vinegar – whatever you want you just need it you need one or some of them
• Condiments of your preference – Dijon mustard especially, it can be used in a wide range of dishes, from salad dressings to sauces and sandwiches.
For baking purposes – or if you’re bakingly inclined
- Vanilla
- Baking Powder
- Baking Soda
- Powered sugar
- Brown sugar
- Chocolate Chips
