Without a doubt, Facebook is great for connecting with old friends, keeping in touch with current ones, and telling the world how drunk you were last night. It’s hard out there for recent college graduates looking for jobs. In fact, I can say confidently that you probably won’t find a “real” job for a while. It’s an employers’ market and they have pick of the litter when it comes to applicants.
What it all comes down too is this… You have 30 other people applying for the same position you are, and if one of theme has a better resume than you they are going to get the job. Hands down.
Establishing a Professional Identity
There are many facets to the world of college, but the most important one is preparing ourselves for real life. Getting a degree opens many doors to the professional world that wouldn’t be there otherwise. Every course you take (well most courses) are meant to provide you with the tools you will need in your field of choice, but you must do a lot of work on your own as well. There are three main components to your professional profile: your resume, cover letter, and networking. You need to present yourself as a professional both on paper and online to set yourself apart from the many other college grads looking for a job.

College students are known for their gratuitous use of the R-word. They are also known for their remarkable self-involvement. I don’t think many college students would argue those two claims. At least most wouldn’t…
That’s why when I saw CJ Porter’s Facebook profile pledging to promote the “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign it struck me as a little odd. Most college students don’t engage in this type of community involvement. Not with that type of dedication.
