The Top Horror Movies of 2012

| October 23, 2012

Horror 2012 1024x632 Throughout each year so many horror movies come out and as we near October we are bombarded with all sorts of Halloween movies. While there are a lot of Halloween movies out there, there is nothing like a horror movie to get in the spirit of this time of year. Below is a list of the top horror movies that have already come out and the ones that look the most promising.

Cabin in the Woods

There was definitely a little bit of everything in this horror movie. There was humor, mystery, suspense, horror, and an ending you would never see coming. Most horror movies are really predictable and you know exactly what is going to happen when you start watching it and I think the directors counted on that. They did really good job with this movie and I think just about everyone was shocked at the outcome. If you like horror movies, this is one you should definitely watch.

House at the End of the Street

This film is a typical horror movie that is very similar to Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller, Psycho. It stars the Hunger Game’s Jennifer Lawrence and Max Thieriot. The movie had a lot of mixed reviews because it had a predictable ending, but don’t most horror movies? Most horror movies end the same way, but that is kind of the point. There is a lot of suspense and it is a good choice for you if you don’t like a lot of blood and gore. It was still a good movie with actors who could pull off their roles.

The RavenThe Raven 211x300

This horror movie is a new twist on the story of Edgar Allen Poe. In this movie Poe spends his final days finding a murderer who is recreating his most famous stories like The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Cask of Amontillado. I feel like you would get more out of it if you know Poe’s stories otherwise it would be a little confusing since they make references to them throughout the movie. Overall, it was good movie and a cool way to retell the horror story that was Edgar Allen Poe’s life.

Woman in Black

As with most people I was pretty skeptical at first about this movie because it is hard to look past Daniel Radcliffe and not see Harry Potter. However, once you get passed Harry Potter being in a horror movie, it is actually a pretty good movie. It is a suspenseful and creepy movie with a good deal of gore and vengeful spirits. At least for me, the ending was a shock and I didn’t see it ending in quite that way.

The Possession

I feel like anything that is based on a true story adds to the creep factor, especially when it is a horror movie. It is a movie about a family uniting in order to stand against an evil that was unleashed through a box. I don’t know if the directors meant to, but there were some scenes that were pretty funny. Whether it is true or not, I was definitely scared so the movie fulfilled its purpose.

Sinister

From the directors and writers of Paranormal Activity and the Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister promises to be the horror movie of the year. Starring Ethan Hawke, Sinister is about a crime novelist who moves away from his previous life to get new inspiration for his books. Left with a box of home videos at his new house, his family is his thrust into the supernatural world. If it is anything like the other movie they directed, it is sure to be a good and scary horror film.

SmileySmiley 300x225

Who could be scared of something called “Smiley?” That is what I thought before I watched the trailer. You don’t even have to watch the trailer to get the creep factor, the movie posters are creepy all on their own. It is a psychological slasher film so just be prepared for all the blood and gore that comes with that. The movie is about an urban legend of a killer with a blank face except for a smile that he carved himself. I’m sure I am not alone when I say I spend way too much time on a computer, and this is exactly how this serial killer is summoned.

Grave Encounters 2

This movie is about film student Alex who is obsessed with the first film and is out to prove those who disbelieve it wrong. Alex and his friends research the events and visit the real psychiatric hospital depicted in the original film where they soon find themselves face-to-face with the same evil. Their only hope for survival lies in their knowledge of the past. This looks like it’s going to scary, but it seems like you need to have watched the first one for this one to make any sense.

Paranormal Activity 4

Ever since the Blair Witch Project, directors have tried to recreate the “recovery footage” feel that the audience enjoyed so much. Paranormal Activity was the first movie since than to be successful with the “home video.” The first two movies in this franchise were both really good and the third one was pretty bad. Luckily, this movie picks up a few years from where the second one left off so hopefully this movie will be much better.

Silent Hill: Revelation

Silent Hill 2 300x202 If you have played the video game or watched the first movie, you know this movie will probably not be for the faint of heart. The movie is about a girl who is haunted by nightmares about the disappearance of her father and she soon discovers she is not who she thinks she is. Her revelation soon leads her to a demonic world that threatens to swallow her whole. The trailers make it look like it will be even scarier than the first one and seems like it will be worth the time and money to watch it.
